“Have you been sleeping at all?” Dr. Wright sat across from Emily, who was unable to hide her distress.

“Not really. I usually get a couple of hours, but I don’t wake up feeling rested at all. I’m just scared; this feels like a false sense of security. I feel like the second I let my guard down, I’m going to wake up to the next plague. Ever since I met with William, I feel as though I’ve been holding my breath and waiting.”

“Waiting for what?”

“I’m not sure. Proof, I guess, that he is or isn’t my stalker. That this is all over and I can go back to worrying about one terrifying man in my life, and only that man. Or I’m waiting for whatever the stalker is planning next. He can only be working up to something big, right? That’s the other explanation for this silence.”

“Have you been going outside, taking walks, running errands for yourself?” Dr. Wright asked, closing her notebook.

Emily flinched. “No, I haven’t, other than coming here. It’s too dangerous. I don’t know who might be watching me. I’ve been reading a lot, which is nice. I got through this new fantasy series in three days since I didn’t have as much work to do at my virtual assistant job. I have graduated to sitting by the window, but I don’t like to do it for very long because I feel too exposed.”

“Are you afraid that if you leave your house more often, something bad is going to happen?”

“Wouldn’t you? Considering my life lately?”

Dr. Wright didn’t answer that. “Let’s do some breathing exercises. There’s an app you can use as well, but I know you’re trying to stay away from technology right now.”
